Adopting dogs is fantastic and rewarding, and likely a whole lot easier than you would think. Shelters and rescues are straining under the pressure of the bad economy too- more dogs turned over at a faster and faster rate as families lose their homes, jobs or are forced to relocate; coupled with fewer donations to combat costs of vetting.
You can find wonderful dogs, purebreds and mix breeds, from puppies to seniors through Petfinder.com.
Pet stores are ALWAYS supplied by puppy millers- the puppies are taken too early from their mother, packed into long cross country trips where many become sick or die. Some puppies are bought, but many including their parents and siblings are left behind for a life confined to cruel, tiny cages with no vet care, in loud, hot, crowded buildings where they never get fresh air or even feel grass on their paws. Please remember, as hard as it is, you are not saving that pet store puppy, you are making room for another.
Be responsible, there are many wonderful dogs already, spay and neuter your pet for a happy, healthier life and please, DON'T SHOP, ADOPT!
If you cannot adopt a shelter dog this month, there are many great ways to support your local shelter and favorite breed rescues with:
1.) YOUR time!
Help walk dogs, clean kennels, foster, or aid with socialization or transportation
2.) your money
Everyone is tight, but even just a little helps, maybe save the money you would otherwise spend on coffee for just one week
3) Supplies
shelters often need simple items like collars, toys, blankets, dog and cat food, cat litter, etc
4.) Attend a walk or other fundraiser- get sponsored!
